I was thrilled when I found this. It's just the thing for steaming fish and dumplings, and I figured I could put it over my stewpan, and use it as a strainer when pouring liquid from the stockpot. It's also made in the USA, which is certainly a feature.

The first time I put the steamer in the dishwasher it turned a dull gray, however, and an email to the company confirmed my fears. The steamer is made of rolled aluminum.

If you don't mind using naked aluminum as cookware, this steamer is relatively well made (a tiny bit sharp edged), and reasonably priced. The discoloration, the company assures me, is harmless. If you DO mind using aluminum, however, this is not the steamer for you.
